Why must the NAACP campion the wrong-headed cause of special rights, instead of the noble one of equal rights?

Because the sad, pathetic reality about the NAACP is that it currently exists solely to benefit its leaders. As such, they'll grab a hold of any issue that thrusts them in front of the microphones.
