How difficult is it to make a living as a writer?

My 17 yr old friend wants to be a writer of poetry. He doesn't want to continue with his education beyond high school and is doubtful he will finish even that as he is homeschooled and very lazy and depressed. He likes writing because it is solitary and a way for him to express himself. How realistic is his goal? Thanks
