Is it worth saving the egg?

Yesterday a plover layed an egg across the road from my house on the neighbours lawn. They haven't been sitting on it, but they've been swooping anyone who walks past. The plovers were still there earlier this morning, but then later they weren't there. Does this mean the egg is dead, or should I save it or something? Is it worth calling a National Park?
