Saltwater tank cycling process?

i recently purchased an aquapod aquarium, and am 3 days into the cycling process. i have 8lbs of live rock and 20lbs of live sand. the filtration system is on, but i took out the carbon. also, i am using old filter material given to me by a friend, hoping it would help with the cycling process. i have been testing my water daily however, the ammonia level does not seem to rise, nor does the nitrite or nitrate levels. what should i do?
